Family: The Vessel for Salvation

"Noah did according to all that the Lord had commanded him."

Genesis 7:5

A couple of nights ago, I was reading a story to Noah before bed about Noah and the ark. There was one part that really stood out to me. It said this: "So Noah and Mrs. Noah, their three sons and their wives, they all began to build the boat that would one day save their lives."

It got me thinking, Noah didn't conform to the world's way of doing things. He built a huge boat in the middle of the desert and kept at it for around hundred years! There was no sign of rain and no sign of water in the land, but it was that boat that would one day save his very life and the lives of his whole family. He simply built the ark in accordance with what God had commanded him to do.

God showed him step by step how to build the very vessel for his salvation, but not just for himself but his whole family too. He was a true man, a true Father and leader of his household. He convinced the rest of his family to follow him on his seemingly foolish endeavour and build this boat, but obviously commanded enough respect for them to follow him. It was that decision that lead to their salvation, and incredibly the salvation of the whole human race.

What kind of father or leader are you?

The truth is none of us are perfect, and if as fathers, husbands and leaders we looked at our flaws we would never be able to succeed in these roles. The great thing is there is hope in the story of Noah. Noah saved himself and his whole family, in turn saving the human race. How did he do this? He did three things.

  1. First, he lived righteously, which enabled him to draw near to God and become a friend of God. Through Jesus blood we too can draw near to God regardless of our past or our flawed, sinful nature. Hebrews 10 verse 19 and 22 says this, "Therefore, brethren, since we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus [...] let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water." If we wish to save ourselves and our families, it starts by drawing near to God through the power of His blood that makes us righteous through faith.
  2. Second, he heard the voice of God. When we draw near to God, He begins to speak to us, guiding and directing our steps to what we should do. God showed Noah exactly how to make the ark that would save him and his family. As men God has given us a guide book, the word of God that speaks to us exactly how we should construct the vessel that will save us and our families.
  3. Lastly, Noah was a hundred percent obedient. All we have to do is be obedient, as Noah was. Notice that this was contrary to what the world around him was saying. Many newspapers and media outlets will try to tell you how to live your life and how you should be or act. They try to convince us what family should look like in this Post-modernist world, that it's okay to have two fathers, or two mothers, that it's alright to break the covenant we made on our wedding day if it's just too hard, that it's fine to think only of ourselves and let our wives do all the work bringing up the kids.

These things are simply not true and contrary to what the manual says. People may come against you and laugh or criticise you for being different. They may call you foolish, or old fashioned, but they laughed at Noah too, right up until the point they all drowned. Just remember that! There will come a moment in your life when the godly decision you make, to build a family according to his world will save you and your family from destruction.

So the question is, are you willing to do what it takes to save yourself and your family in this day and age where a wave of ungodly thinking and attitudes have been raised up to destroy what God has established? I'm not going to lie Noah worked hard in order to build the ark. It will cost you greatly to be the difference, however, it will cost you more not to.
