“Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him.

And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.”

(Ecclesiastes 4:12)

In His infinite wisdom, the Lord established that the foundation of His relationship with the people of Israel would be for them to always have God in first place and love Him above all things. When we, as children of God understand that we were created to have communion with our Creator and give Him the first place, we will then be establishing our home upon the best foundation, Jesus Christ.

But, how do we do it?

In our marriage

If you’re married, it is absolutely fundamental for God to always be your first love. No person or thing can occupy God’s place in our heart. Derek Prince, the great Bible teacher, shares a few principles he established in his home to nourish his relationship with God daily. A habit he had was to set apart one day of the week only to wait on the Lord along with his wife. On that day, they didn’t organize any plans, they were completely willing and available to hear God’s voice.

They weren’t always sure how those days would turn out, but it was in those moments that their faith and dreams were nourished and strengthened. Something they also did was pray together. In regards to this, Derek Prince said, “For 30 years, Lydia and I have prayed and read the Bible together almost every day -- usually twice a day. Very often, God spoke to us in a very intimate way in those times of communication with Him and each other.

This principle was one of the keys that made our marriage a solid and successful one.”

In our family

Our family needs to see us loving God, praying and loving His Word. We have all heard that our actions speak much louder than our words. In my case, this is definitely true because it’s what I received from my parents. I was able to see a real, personal and exciting relationship between God and my parents up close.

This doesn’t mean my dad walked around with his Bible in his hand all day, every day. However, his actions, words and lifestyle reflected the God of the Bible. To see Jesus in my parents is what led us to seek our own Creator for ourselves as children. Nothing can compare to the great riches we received in our home. We grew up loving and studying the Word.

It was something normal for us, part of our lifestyle. I grew up serving in church, since I was very young I got involved in different areas of ministry, and I think this was one of the things that brought protection to my life.

When we make our relationship with God a priority in our lives, and when we live for God 100%, we are giving our kids the greatest life lessons. This is what God called us for, that is why we’re here, to life up a generation for God.
